Renee’s story

Renee had a moped accident when she was 16 and therefore has to wear a prosthetic leg. Renee has been a client of our location in Utrecht for several years, but recently became acquainted with Protec, our location in Amsterdam.

What did you think of our location in Amsterdam?

I thought it was a very special experience. What a special location! You don’t feel like a patient at all, especially because there is no medical atmosphere at all. It’s not a hospital, if you know what I mean. The space is open and tastefully decorated. I really like the industrial atmosphere, so the environment suits me completely. The small scale also gives a good feeling. You can’t really explain it, you have to experience it.

How were you received?

I was very kindly received by my orthopedic instrument maker. He took all the time for me. He is open and takes you very much into his thoughts and decision-making about the facility. Making a suitable leg prosthesis for my small stump is not easy. I also have problems in my upper leg, which don’t make it any easier. And what is also special: no question is too much for him! You can sometimes feel that you are asking too much, but he has never given me that feeling. I really enjoyed thinking about the best solution together. We have also opted for a different prosthetic foot and a different type of socket. After fitting, Kas immediately made a gait analysis.

Renee likes the fact that fitting, fitting and gait analyzes take place in rapid succession!

The gait analysis took place on the same day?

Yes, immediately after fitting, a gait analysis was done and discussed with me afterwards. I could see myself on video footage. You can then immediately see together how you walk with your new leg prosthesis and where adjustments are needed, what is going well and what can be improved. The whole process is effective and efficient and therefore faster. I have now tested the prosthesis in the home situation for a while and we have done a second gait analysis. I am satisfied and the prosthesis can be finished. I still find that exciting, but I am confident that it will be a nice finish. I like to wear skirts and want a prosthesis that is as close as possible to my other leg.

Will you stay with Protec?

Absolutely, I really like it here!

A few years after her leg amputation, Eugénie van Huijgevoort competes in adaptive CrossFit competitions. Eugénie was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2017. During her treatments, she developed blood clots, which led to the amputation of her left upper leg. "After my amputation, I became less hesitant. That’s why I’m embracing the adventure of the Adaptive CrossFit Games in Texas."

"It’s really strange to be able to see everything from a different perspective. I’m at eye level with others again. I can definitely feel it in all my muscles that I’m moving in a different way. The people in the apartment complex where we live were astonished when they saw me walking with crutches down the hallway. And when I first went to see my grandchildren with my prosthesis, my grandson was shocked when I stood at the door."
